The Wrangler Rubicon Jeep is offering in standard guise is already a quite potent offroader. Considering its DNA and pedigree, it’s easy to see why. However, as is the case with any other car out there, improvement can be done and we just took note of how many of them thanks to our recent encounter with a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon from Rugged Ridge.
The guys from Rugged Ridge are part of the bigger Omix-ADA group that is the market-leader for replacement and restoration Jeep parts. That definitely comes in handy, but the tuner is about more than just that. Having been established back in 2005, the guys know how to handle a Jeep and we were eager to see what their creation had in store for us.
On the outside, you’ll notice that this is no regular Jeep in no time. If the name of the car, written on the front fenders, isn’t a dead giveaway, the 4-inch lift the suspension received must be. Chip in the 37” mud terrain tires that cost $870 each and you get a pretty good idea of the fact that this Wrangler means business.
The bad news is that the business must be kept nearly entirely off the road. On the highway, the car’s tall center of gravity, the revised gearing, and the tires make driving at speeds higher than 55 mph a true challenge in a lot of ways. It doesn’t really matter though because we’re not here trying to turn this Jeep into a highway cruiser.
What we’re here for is testing this thing in some of the worst case scenarios and, guess what, it passed every test with flying colors! The Rugged Ridge beast drove over everything we threw at it and we were riding on the toughest trails the Jeep enthusiasts in the area could recommend.
Considering that the Rubicon starts at $36,000 and that all of the upgrades this car got from Rugged Edge add up to $17,000 for a grand total of $53,000 this thing sure makes it all worth while. The best bit is that you can get whatever you want as you’re not forced to buy the entire package.
