It's been a while since the GM Design Center's social media outlet came up with a hypothetical proposal for a model that may never be, so enthusiasts rushed to give us their opinions on the CGI matters.
The parallel universes of vehicular CGI are filled with members of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators – some are young and inexperienced, others are not-so-old but still wise, and a few even dwell around official design center premises but still like to share their unofficial work from time to time. And then there's the social media account of the General Motors Design studios – which loves to share "a behind-the-scenes look at the work that happens (there)."
They show us real people and how they bring various aspects of an automobile to life; they give us glimpses into the design process of models that are coming out soon and sometimes even take a look back in history. However, from time to time, they also like to taunt the fans with ideation sketches that may or may never morph into a real vehicle, even though they were all designed by official members of the design team.
Just recently, that exact thing happened with Jason Chen and his "bold truck sketch" depicting a modern yet rugged GMC model – most likely an EV, judging by the lack of a radiator grille up front. Many fans immediately thought it was 'fire' – not on fire but rather as cool as a bonfire. Others immediately popped the question – are we looking at the 2027 GMC Canyon EV in a premiere?
After all, it would make sense – GMC already sells the $96,550 Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV, as well as the $97,500 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. They're priced way closer to each other for comfort, and they're all hulking full-size trucks with a mass that could move the moon if they impact it. So, a smaller mid-size truck going after the Rivian offerings would certainly make sense at a lower pricing point.
However, not all folks think the same – some of them don't want lifestyle trucks with a small bed and few off-road qualities, for example. On the other hand, it seems that people are on to something – GM's Design Center also posted a truck sketch with "bold lines and a tough attitude" a few days ago, designed by David Acosta, and folks also asked if they can get a mid-size EV truck smaller than the Silverado EV but with up to 300 miles of range and a 5,000-lbs towing capacity. We've also embedded that option below. So, what do you think? Do you want a smaller EV pickup truck from GM?
