With housing prices and living costs continuing to increase, more and more Canadians are looking for solutions to cut costs and live more simply. Scaling down on living space and adopting a more minimalist and intentional lifestyle is one way to simplify one's life, that's why there has been a growing trend toward tiny home living in Canada in recent years.
People are drawn to tiny living due to several potential benefits it might bring into their lives. For one, tiny homes are more affordable than traditional houses, making them an appealing solution for budget-conscious folks and first-time homebuyers. Tiny homes are also more energy efficient, which results in lower utility bills, and because they have a smaller footprint, they also appeal to those who want to minimize their environmental impact.

Mike Roy's Carpentry & Tiny Homes, a small builder based in Oromocto, New Brunswick, focuses on crafting tiny homes that offer all of the above benefits and are also capable of withstanding the harsh Canadian winters.

With over 30 years of experience in woodworking, the builder uses plenty of timber in the construction of their tiny homes, resulting in eye-pleasing designs with warm and inviting interiors. The most remarkable model offered by this company is the Eastern Pine, a tiny house on wheels designed to run fully off-grid to help support comfortable living from any location.

The New Brunswick area has been repeatedly affected by devastating floods in recent years, and many people who own land there were unable to rebuild their foundation-based homes because of the high waters. Mike Roy's Carpentry has thought out this tiny home model as a solution for those living in areas that are prone to flooding and need a portable dwelling that can easily be moved out of harm's way.

At 35 feet long and 8.5 feet wide, the Eastern Pine is a road-legal tiny home that you can easily relocate if needed. What's more, its mobile nature offers owners a sense of freedom and flexibility that traditional homeowners can only dream about.

Built on a triple-axle trailer, this compact home features a two-tone timber-clad exterior that gives it a rustic look, a shingle roof with an asymmetrical design, and various clerestory windows that maximize natural light inside. The builder used natural wood products only in its construction, as well as high-quality insulation to make it suitable for year-long living even in the chilliest weather conditions. They also encourage alternative energy sources, so this home is equipped with solar panels and a small wood stove.

Therefore, all you need to start living more simply and easily is a piece of land and a well or an alternative water supply source. The home is equipped with an incinerating toilet and a gray water tank, so you won't need a septic system. All this makes it an extremely energy-efficient and sustainable housing solution for nature lovers.

The interior of the house features a simple floor plan with a cozy living room, a fully-kitted-out kitchen, and a full bathroom on the ground floor, plus two sleeping lofts mirroring each other at opposite ends of the structure.

In terms of styling, the cozy and exquisite wooden aesthetic carries on inside the house, with different types and shades of wood used throughout. For the walls, the designer chose the classic white shiplap to achieve that old farmhouse vibe, but the ceilings, benchtops, and cabinets are all made of different types of wood, giving the interior warmth and a distinctive rustic charm. But apart from the pleasing aesthetic, these materials are high-quality and low maintenance, offering exceptional durability.

The kitchen is the heart and soul of this tiny house and has been equipped with everything you need for full-time living, including a full range, a large double sink, and a full-size fridge. There is also plenty of counter space for meal prep and a live-edge pine wood breakfast bar that makes the connection with the living area. Across from the kitchen, you'll also find a long fold-down ledge that can be used as a dining spot.

What makes this kitchen truly unique is the meticulously crafted barnwood-style cabinet doors, which have rustic hinges and unique handles shaped like small branches. The storage units integrated under the staircase leading to the main loft boast similarly styled doors to create a sense of unity.

The lounge is large enough to fit an L-shaped couch for relaxing evenings in front of a wall-mounted TV, while an arched cathedral window that extends to the above loft keeps the space bright and open. The two lofted sleeping spaces can both accommodate queen-size mattresses and are incredibly luminous thanks to their open design and a multitude of windows.

The bathroom inside the Eastern Pine adopts the same rustic aesthetic with charming wood panels on the walls but offers modern functionality. Apart from the essential facilities, such as a shower, toilet, and sink, it also includes a washer/dryer combo unit.

The off-grid-capable Eastern Pine tiny home was built in 2020 and briefly operated as a five-star Airbnb. This exquisite model not only showcases the builder's excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail but also proves that you can go back to the basics with the luxury of modern 21st-century conveniences. If the design piqued your interest, Mike Roy's Carpentry & Tiny Homes can build you a similar one for about CAD $139,000 (about US $99,300 at current exchange rates).
