The European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) just published its latest safety ratings, and one of the vehicles involved had a disappointing result.
While the Transit Courier van, on which the passenger version known as the Ford Tourneo Courier was built, received a Platinum rating from the safety specialist this year, being praised for its active safety features, the minivan has done worse. Out of a total of five stars, the vehicle was awarded with only three, and Euro NCAP has called this result "surprisingly mediocre."
The Ford Tourneo Courier was rated as 'poor' for the small female sitting in the rear seat in the full-width rigid barrier frontal impact. Overall, the people carrier scored only 62% in the Adult Safety department and 54% in the Safety Assist category. It also did 80% and 81% in the Child Occupant and Vulnerable Road Users (pedestrian) categories, and Euro NCAP understands that "this will be rectified," with the updated vehicle being reassessed next year (2025).
"It seems that Euro NCAP is setting a tough task for manufacturers, yet we work closely together with industry, encouraging changes in car design that ultimately save lives," said Euro NCAP's Secretary General, Dr. Michiel van Ratingen. "As Euro NCAP upgrades its protocols to be more stringent, with new guidelines for safety technologies and in relation to vulnerable users, we are ensuring that as a consumer, you have the best safety equipment available as standard on your new car."
Euro NCAP also assessed the Cupra Tavascan, praising its active hood, driver monitoring system, lane support, and other features and ultimately awarding it the highest safety rating. The Spanish model scored 89% in adult safety, 86% in child safety, 80% in pedestrian safety, and 79% in safety assistance categories. The new-gen Ford Capri was also awarded five stars and did identical to the Cupra in all categories mentioned above, save for the safety one, where it scored 72%.
The MG HS also underwent the European safety specialist's crash-testing criteria and came out as a winner with five stars. According to Euro NCAP, this model did 90%, 85%, 83%, and 74% in the adult, child, pedestrian and safety system categories, respectively. Identical to the Renault Captur, the Mitsubishi ASX received a four-star safety rating in Euro NCAP's tests. The Renault Rafale PHEV scored the maximum safety rating, and so did the Chery Omoda5 in its battery-electric flavor.
Euro NCAP previously said that the Jeep Avenger is 'mediocre,' having tested it earlier this fall, and advised customers to purchase something safer than the new generation 2024 Dacia Duster, which was crash-tested a few months ago and scored three stars.
