The fifth generation of the Ford Expedition broke cover in the fall of 2024 for the 2025 model year, and the full-size SUV came with significant improvements over its predecessor.
Ford retired the fourth generation of the Expedition after less than eight years since the model's introduction in 2017. The full-size SUV didn't look outdated, especially after several upgrades for the 2019, 2020, and 2022 model years, respectively. However, the blue-oval brand considered that it needed something even more advanced. As a result, the 2025 Ford Expedition came with more technology, more comfort amenities, and more luxurious items for the brand's flagship SUV. Still, the vehicle remained true to its roots, and the automaker used a body-on-frame construction. Even though it seemed to share its chassis with its predecessor, it was actually entirely new from the ground up.
At the front, the 2025 Ford Expedition featured broad C-shaped daytime running lights. Its headlights with three distinct LED blocks were concealed below the upper stripe of the DRLs. The wide grille with horizontal slats housed a pair of offroad lights for the Tremor trim level. The automaker placed a set of side scoops on the lower bumper that helped reduce consumption by creating an air curtain. In addition, Ford offered a metallic shield underneath the bumper to protect the drivetrain. Last but not least, the automaker added the EXPEDITION nameplate on chromed lettering on the hood as a statement of luxury.
Ever since the first generation of the Expedition, introduced in 1997, this full-size SUV has tried to impress its customers with its dimensions. For the 2025 model year, the car didn't grow much compared to its predecessor, but the design was still utterly new. Its flared wheel arches on both axles and the chromed stripe at the lower side of the window area emphasized the car's massive dimensions, even though it wasn't the largest in its segment. Despite the fact that most automakers tried to create retractable door handles flush with the bodywork, the 2025 Ford Expedition had grab handles. The door mirrors sported LED turn signal lamps and integrated cameras for the 360-degree view system.
The interior was made to impress customers. With room for up to eight passengers and available captain chairs for the middle row, the 2025 Ford Expedition confirmed its upscale orientation. No buttons, knobs, switches, or plastics were carried over from the previous generation of Ford's main flagship SUV. Fronting the driver was a new dashboard design, with a flat area at the top and a 24-inch panoramic display at the windshield's bottom. In addition, the automaker added a 13.5-inch touchscreen on the center stack that showed navigation, media, and other settings for heating and ventilation. For the lower grades, the automaker installed standard cloth materials for the seats. In contrast, the upper grades of the vehicle received standard leather-wrapped interiors.
Under the hood, the 2025 Ford Expedition had a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which was available in two power levels, 400 hp (406 PS) and 440 hp (446 PS), respectively. Both variants sent their oomph via a standard ten-speed automatic gearbox. The all-wheel independent suspension and the redesigned chassis significantly improved Ford's largest SUV. Thanks to its independent suspension in all corners and up to 9,600 lbs. (4,354 kg) towing rating, the 2025 Ford Expedition was a worthy successor of the previous generations of this nameplate.
