At the beginning of the year, Ford executives were anticipating an EV market meltdown and acted accordingly, reducing the production of full electric cars and boosting that of the ICEs. But look at them now! The Ford F-150 Lightning sales numbers have just doubled in the third quarter of the year.
Ford delivered 478,326 units (Lincoln sales not included) in the third quarter of 2024, which is down by 0.4% compared to the same period of last year. However, the automaker noticed an increase of 12% in the sales of hybrids and 38% for the full electric cars. The star of the lineup is the F-150 Lightning, selected by 105% more customers, alongside the Ranger, ordered by 110% more customers.
Ford sold 15,504 Ranger examples and moved 7,162 F-150 Lightning units. However, the Mustang Mach-E remains the brand's best-selling EV with 13,392 units. Thus, Ford remains the second EV brand in the US with sales up 12% in Q3. Tesla moved 463,000 vehicles in Q3.
The Dearborn-based carmaker also accounts for the highest transaction prices of all non-luxury electric vehicle brands.
The brand is now making efforts to boost EV sales. In order to do that, it is offering a home charger free of cost for all those who buy a Mustang Mach-E crossover, a Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck, or an E-Transit van.
The installation and access to a 24/7 Ford advisor for electric vehicle support are also included. The move comes even though Ford decided to scrap plans for the three-row electric SUV that it was planning to launch next year.
The carmaker anticipated an EV market meltdown. Even though the meltdown did happen, Ford was not affected, as it registered increasing numbers all throughout the year. To prevent loss, Ford decided to reduce the number of shifts from three to two in the production of the F-150 Lightning, while adding one more shift on the production line of the Bronco.
There were also 20,129 hybrid Fords sold in the third quarter of the year, which represents an increase of 64%. It is the number 1 brand in the hybrid truck segment, with a 77% segment share as total hybrid sales went up by 38%. It also sits in the first place in the vans segment with the Transit, in the three-row SUV class with the Explorer and among sports cars with the Mustang.
The sales of the F-Series Super Duty increased by 12% compared with the same period a year ago and are up 9% through September.
The Ford F-Series remains America's bestseller in 2024 and is America's best-selling truck line for the 48th consecutive year, with 550,835 units sold through September. The F-Series outsells the Chevrolet Silverado by 138,000 and the Ram by 282,000 units.
