Waze has become a must-have driving companion for a growing number of users, and I can't blame them. Traffic is a nightmare in most large cities, with rush hours typically involving bumper-to-bumper traffic that forces us to wait and look at each other for way too long.
As a result, it's no wonder that people have turned to all the solutions that could help them avoid this nightmare traffic.

Waze is one of the most common and effective choices, as it's become a master of finding faster routes to destinations and avoiding slowdowns. While many people use Waze to get speed trap notifications, this application is a modern-day weapon to get to your destination faster by avoiding the most awful traffic jams on your route.

Starting this summer, Waze can also display navigation information on your lock screen even when your phone is locked.

This means that you no longer have to keep your phone's screen enabled permanently, which helps a lot if you're struggling with a low battery but also extends your device's life. Instead, Waze can display essential navigation data on the lock screen.

As anyone can easily tell, this feature is aimed at mobile phones, so you won't get it on Android Auto, CarPlay, or Android Automotive. It was released for Android and iPhone, but Apple users must wait a bit longer to receive it. The support for lock screen navigation is already live on Android.

The feature is enabled by default on Android devices, but as with any other feature, not everybody wants to get lock screen navigation when the phone is locked. As a side note, if you connect your phone to your vehicle to run Android Auto and you keep your mobile device locked, Waze won't show lock screen navigation, as the full experience is already displayed on the screen in the dashboard.

Waze has decided to enable this feature by default, so if you want to disable it, you must open Waze and head over to Settings > General.

Look for an option called "Lock screen navigation," and if you have already received this feature, tap the toggle to disable it.

You don't have to close the app, as the changes should be applied on the spot. The next time you lock your phone, Waze should no longer appear on the screen.

Waze has received several big updates lately, contrary to many people's expectations who believed that Google would eventually kill off the app and transfer its best assets to Google Maps.

Rumors about a potential merger between Google Maps and Waze have been around since Google purchased the latter more than a decade ago, but the search giant has never commented on them. Instead, the company focused on improving the app, and some of the updates it released throughout the past decade confirmed that Waze will remain a separate app operating independently from Google Maps.

However, I can understand that some people believe the long-term goal is to combine the two apps. The latest updates release for Google Maps addresses the feature gap between the two apps, with incident reporting now available on Android Auto and CarPlay.

Previously, Google Maps only offered the ability to pin hazards on the map on mobile devices. With this expansion, Google Maps expands deeply into Waze's territory, despite Google trying to avoid possible cannibalization with different options for the two apps.

Google Maps only supports common traffic hazards, like accidents, speed cameras, and roadworks. Waze offers a wider range of reports, including potholes, broken traffic lights, roadkill, fog, and blocked lanes.

Furthermore, Waze has been improved with the addition of more permanent road features. These reports are alerts added to the map by editors and include speed bumps, merging lanes, and speed limit changes.

This means that users can't report these items but they can request their addition to the local volunteers who continue to improve Waze regularly.

Meanwhile, Google Maps has started importing more data from Waze, including speed camera reports. The next time you drive with Google Maps and see a speed camera notification, it might be imported from Waze, as Google wants to use its traffic navigation app more effectively. Google Maps doesn't have the same number of contributing users as Waze, and considering its incident reporting engine is still in its early days, it needs data to populate the map and make the feature work as expected.

The Google-owned company hasn't provided any ETA information on the debut of lock screen navigation in Waze on iPhone. However, considering the feature is already live on Android, it shouldn't take long before it makes its debut on iPhones.

The Waze team is a bit busy these days, as it spends more time fixing bugs than developing new features, but fingers crossed that new capabilities will be added shortly.
