Hyundai and its premium-oriented sibling have issued a pretty big recall comprising 145,235 electric vehicles produced for the United States market. According to Hyundai Motor America, the integrated charging control unit may become damaged.
A damaged ICCU means no charging of the 12-volt battery, in which case a loss of drive power cannot be ruled out. Based on documents filed by the South Korean automaker with the US auto safety regulator, Hyundai Motor Company started looking into this matter back in October 2022.

It all started with ICCU warranty returns from a plethora of markets. Hyundai engineers observed heat damage on the low-voltage converted field effect transistor (or transistors) of the integrated charging control unit. In light of this discovery, the automaker switched its attention to evaluating any potential overcurrent modes in the ICCU.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation got in touch with Hyundai Motor America in April 2023 over a report alleging a loss of motive power in a US-market Ioniq 5. Long story short, Hyundai and Genesis launched separate recalls to address the described problem in July 2023 and September 2023, respectively. Be that as it may, the federal watchdog continued to receive customer-submitted reports of motive power loss from owners of vehicles remedied under the aforementioned service campaigns.

Lo and behold, preliminary findings of returned parts indicated a damaged MOSFET, namely the internal metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor in the integrated charging control unit, which is produced by the Hyundai-controlled Mobis Corporation. As per the attached portable document file, Hyundai implemented improved ICCU software in vehicle production beginning in November 2024.

The remedy for the recalled vehicles isn't particularly straightforward. Hyundai and Genesis dealer service technicians will first have the integrated charging control unit and the ICCU fuse inspected. If needed, both will be replaced at no charge to affected customers. For vehicles with no signs of damage to the unit and its fuse, updated software is the fix.

Hyundai underlines that said revision of the ICCU software prevents overvoltage at the start and end of the battery charging cycle. Furthermore, the November 2024 update boasts improvements to water pump and radiator fan operation. Known owners of recalled vehicles will be informed of the campaign by first-class mail by January 17.

As for the affected nameplates, the list kicks off with 2022 to 2024 model year Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossovers produced between October 4, 2021 and October 9, 2024. It continues with the 2023 to 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan, followed by the 2023 to 2025 Genesis GV60, the 2023 to 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70, and 2023 to 2024 Genesis Electrified G80.

Of said nameplates, the zero-emission sedan is the priciest of the bunch at $74,375 before taxes and options. By comparison, the all-electric version of the GV70 starts at 66,950 buckaroos, with the Ioniq 5-twinned GV60 retailing at 52,350 dollars as of this writing.
