history
The Vietnamese automaker Vinfast evolved rapidly on the market. Its first cars were unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, and they were based on former BMW models. But that was just the beginning of the journey.
Vinfast is part of the Vietnamese Vingroup holding, and it has high ambitions. Its first factory was opened after just 21 months since the construction started, and it was fitted with a press shop, engine shop, assembly, and paint. Moreover, it hired Pininfarina design studio to reshape the BMW 5 Series (F10) and the BMW X5 (F15), which became the Vinfast A2.0 and the Vinfast SA2.0, respectively.
But these vehicles were built only for the new automaker to understand the market. Seeing the trends shifting towards electric mobility, it made an abrupt turn by ending the production of both models in 2022 and introducing a new lineup of electric vehicles. It was a huge surprise for the automotive industry. In addition, Vinfast also broke ground in the U.S. in 2022 and started to build a factory in Chatham, North Carolina, investing more than $4 bln. in the new facility.
Its focus on electric vehicles resulted in six ranges of automobiles that covered mostly the crossover segment. Apart from cars, Vinfast was also involved in the production of electric scooters and buses. Thanks to the huge financial support from its parent-company Vingroup, the Vietnamese automaker will bring new technologies, and it will offer them at lower prices than its main competitors.
