Alpine unleashed the fastest and most powerful vehicle in its history at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, a car that defied the electrification trend in an era when most other supercars were helped to reach their goals by electric motors.

Alpine was born as a sports car manufacturer in the mid-50s and has maintained close ties with Renault throughout its existence. Unfortunately, hard financial times forced the small shop to give up and sell its assets to the French automaker, who couldn’t keep it afloat. However, in 2017, the once-famous brand Alpine was resurrected as a separate brand within the Renault Group and launched the lightweight A110. Despite having a small turbocharged inline-four engine, it could sit at the same table as other sports car manufacturers. Its secret was in plain sight: lightweight, mid-engined, and rear-wheel drive. The A110 had all the assets it needed to beat some more expensive and more polished brands around a track. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Other versions followed. In 2024, at the Paris Motor Show, the French sports car specialist revealed the A110 R Ultime as the pinnacle of the A110 lineup. The Ultime (the last) was the final chapter of the A110 R lineup, but not the end of the road for Alpine cars.

One of the most charismatic parts of the 2024 Alpine A110 R Ultime parts was its front. The car resembled the first A110. Its tear-shaped, swept-back headlights had round daytime running lights resembling the headlamps of its 1963 ancestor. Furthermore, a set of round LEDs surrounded the fog lamps mounted on the car’s nose, which echoed those from the rally car that won the inaugural manufacturers’ World Rally Championship in 1973. The lower side of the bumper revealed a redesigned apron featuring a trapezoidal-shaped air intake. A pair of side scoops enhanced by winglets that increased downforce.

From its profile, the mid-engined coupe boasted its carbon fiber side sills that played a crucial role in the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The 2024 Alpine A110 R Ultime had a front carbon fiber hood that could be left unpainted or sporting the body color. Like the rest of its stablemates, it featured air intakes on the sides that fed the engine with fresh air. The car ran on 18-inch forged alloy wheels at the front and 19-inch ones at the rear, with a ten-spoke design. At the back, like its A110 R Turini sibling, the Ultime version had no rear window since a thin sheet of carbon fiber was lighter than a glass panel. Behind that, the French car manufacturer placed a massive carbon fiber wing that contributed to the car’s downforce, which was increased compared with its previous limited edition version by 160 kilos (353 lbs.).

The Alpine A110 R Ultime was built in 110 units, and customers could personalize their vehicles. Besides the 27 exterior colors available for the bodywork, the cabin could be tailor-made. With a choice of nine Alcantara colors and ten leather options, the car exceeded the expectations of most customers. However, it had the same digital instrument panel and touchscreen infotainment system as the rest of the range. In addition, the car manufacturer added a unique plaque at the bottom of the center stack that showed the unit’s number.

But no sports car could be completed without a special engine. Alpine’s engineering team burned the midnight oil to boost the vehicle’s performance. Besides making the vehicle lighter, they reworked the 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four powerhouse and made it provide 345 PS (340 hp). All the oomph was sent to the rear wheels via a new automatic, dual-clutch gearbox. As a result, the 2024 Alpine A110 R Ultime could rocket from naught to 100 kph (0-62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds.

Alpine created a track-focused version for its nimble A110 following a simple yet effective recipe and created a car that could tackle many supercars on a tight track.

Renault was known for creating mass-market vehicles and also some of the best European hot hatches, such as the Clio Renault Sport and the Megane Renault Sport. But in its portfolio, it also had the Alpine brand that it bought in 1973, a small car manufacturer that stunned the world with its victories in rallies. But fast forward to 2017, and the Alpine badge was brought onto the world's automotive stage with a new product: the A110. But for some people, that was not enough. So Alpine pushed harder, and in 2023 it introduced the R version of them.

Featuring a 32 kg (70 lbs) lighter construction than its A110 S sibling, the R version confirmed that "light" was not enough for those who wanted to go faster around a track. In addition, along with the weight-reduction program, the car received a new look. At the front, the carbon-fiber hood sported vents and air intakes that enhanced the car's aerodynamics. In addition, a carbon-fiber lip was mounted at the bottom of the spoiler. To further enhance the downforce, the A110 R featured a swan-neck wing on the trunk and a new diffuser under the rear bumper. Last but not least, the car looked sportier thanks to its black greenhouse and carbon-fiber wheels.

Inside, the A110 R featured a race-inspired cabin fitted with a pair of carbon-fiber sports seats and a six-point harness. But still, on the center stack, it left the touchscreen for the infotainment system. The dashboard covered in Alcantara prevented window glare, helping the driver choose the right line around corners.

The car's underpinnings were also improved by a 10% stiffer suspension on both axles and adjustable shocks that could lower the car's ground clearance by 10 mm (0.4").

Alpine is part of the Renault carmaker, but it is focused only on performance cars. But it is more than what M is for BMW or SRT for Dodge. It made completely different cars than the rest of its owner's lineup.

History says that Alpine snatched the Monte Carlo Rally victory from other sports cars makers back in the '60s. But over the years, the Alpine brand died after it was included in Renault and transformed into the Renault Sport brand. Yes, it still made sporty cars and featured different engines and suspension than the rest of the Renault range. Yet, it didn't have a specific model. When Renault decided to revamp the Alpine brand, it created the A110, which resembled the original Alpine sports car: light, mid-engined, with round headlights, and a unique-shaped, fiber-glass bodywork.

In 2021, Alpine returned with a refreshed lineup, but most of its upgrades were on the interior, trims, and suspension.

Inside, the carmaker placed Sabelt seats with microfiber upholstery. On the dashboard, a 7" infotainment system was a clear sign of modernism. Moreover, it featured Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The general sporty atmosphere was emphasized by the aluminum sport pedals enhanced by leather and aluminum trims from the cabin.

Behind the cockpit, the carmaker placed the same 1.8-liter turbocharged engine paired with a seven-speed automatic (dual-clutch) gearbox. Its 44:56 weight distribution allowed a predictive, oversteered car behavior.

Renault dug deep into its past, extracted the Alpine badge, and placed it on an entirely new car designed to beat Porsche Cayman.

Back in the '60s, the Renault Alpine A110 won the Monte Carlo Rallye. It was a light and nimble car that slid around the snowy curves with the grace of a ballerina. Its handling helped it win the race a few times. As time went by, the car was improved, until it became too expensive and the sales dropped, and Renault pulled the plug on it. In 2016, the French carmaker revealed a concept car that recalled the shape of the original A110 and, in 2017, it launched the production model.

At the front, the quad headlight design with a round LED shape for the DRLs resembled the older model. Even the profiled line from the front's trunk lid recalled the original model. It was a retro-design done well. The aerodynamic package was new, with a wide lower front grille and two side vents placed in front of the wheels, and those were functional. Its profile revealed a sloped rear window, similar to the one from the 1962 Alpine. With its LED taillights and the center-mounted exhaust, the rear side looked different from the original, and that was a good thing.

Inside, the carmaker installed sport bucket seats with high bolstering to keep their occupants in place during high-speed cornering. Its dashboard featured a digital instrument cluster with a design that recalled the original Alpine. A tall bridge connected the center stack with the center console, leaving a small storage area underneath it.

But the most important part of the mid-engined car was the drivetrain. It carried over the powerplant from the acclaimed Renault Megane RS but upgraded up to 292 hp for the top version. The standard gearbox was a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic.

The second generation of the Alpine was introduced in 1961 and it was mainly based on the existing Renault Gordini. It was introduced as a coupe (Berlinette) and after that as a convertible.

The Alpine was for Renault what was the Shelby for Ford. It wasn't a special department, but a different company. It was independent until 1973 when the state-owned Renault car-maker bought the small manufacturer and transformed it into the Renault-Sport department.

The A110 was largely based on its predecessor, the A108. It was designed by Giovanni Michelotti, who also worked for Ferrari, Maserati, BMW, or Triumph, to name just a few. The four-headlamps installed on the front were one of the main characteristics of the car. Since the engine was mounted in the back, there was no front air-intake to cool it. The short greenhouse featured a raked rear window. Behind, a short engine-compartment lid was placed between the two large air-scoops on the quarter panels. The bodywork was made out of plastic materials.

Inside, the two bucket seats were placed low on the floor. The instrument panel featured five dials, with a large tachometer on the left and the speedometer on the right. Under the dash, in the middle, there were pull-buttons for a few other functions of the car: two for ventilation, one for the fan, and the rear window defroster. The floor-mounted gear-stick for the 5-speed gearbox featured an aluminum ball.

The Alpine A110 was offered with few engine options, between 1.1-liter and 1.6-liter ranged between 55 hp and 140 hp. The light bodywork and the independent suspension in all corners made the car very nimble. And that's how the French brand has beaten Porsche and took 6 overall victories in the 1973 World Rally Championship, including the famous Monte Carlo and Sanremo races.
