Jay Leno was seriously injured after falling 60 feet downhill when he was on his way out to dinner. The host of the "Jay Leno's Garage" show has his face black and blue and his left eye swollen after the incident, and he broke the wrist and lost a nail on his left hand.
Jay Leno, 74, suffered major bruising to the left side of his face following an accident during the weekend. He told the story before a show in Beverly Hills, where he went wearing a patch over his left eye.
Leno told reporters that he was staying at a Hampton Inn in Pennsylvania, about 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh on Saturday night. He was walking to a nearby restaurant in the evening when he stumbled and fell 60 feet down a hill.
The comedian also broke his wrist and lost a fingernail on his left hand. Jay Leno lifted the patch to show a swollen black eye that he can't open yet. He also wore a bandage on his left hand as he showed up on Comedy for Koby on Monday night.
He wasn't driving on the night of the incident. The route to the restaurant, indicated by the hotel staff, involved walking for about a mile and a half, he revealed for TMZ.
He decided to take a shortcut down a hill to get to the restaurant quicker. "The hill doesn't look that steep, about 60, 70 feet. Let me see if I can get down there. And then, I fell down, boom, boom, boom," he remembered. He hit several rocks in the fall. "I rolled down the hill, hit my head on a rock, and it knocked me in the eye."
Despite the severe injuries, he didn't take a single day off. He went on to perform a standup routine at a comedy event just three hours after the fall. "When you've got 2,600 people waiting on you, the show must go on," he told TMZ. Leno went to a hospital once he got back to Los Angeles.
It seems that Jay Leno strings out accidents like no other. "The great thing about this age is that you don't learn from your mistakes. You just keep doing the same stupid things," he laughed off his bad luck.
Two years ago, he was involved in another accident that sent him to the hospital. Back then, he suffered third-degree burns to his face, chest, and hands while working on a car that caught fire in his home garage. A month later, he broke his collarbone and two ribs and cracked both his kneecaps when he crashed while riding his motorbike.
