Mazda introduced the CX-70 nameplate in its inventory at the beginning of 2024 for the 2025 model year, and unlike other automakers who focused on electric drivetrains, it offered an inline-six and a PHEV version.
The Japanese automaker didn’t look like it followed the trends when it launched the CX-70. It built the SUV on the same large platform as its flagship crossover, the CX-90. Unlike that, the CX-70 was a two-row vehicle, targeting customers who were looking for something different than what most other automakers offered. Besides the styling, which followed Mazda’s design language used on other models, the CX-70 came with a bold approach and upscale features that could attract customers from the premium segment.
At the front, the 2025 CX-70 featured a similar front fascia as its bigger brother, the CX-90. Its headlights sported LED daytime running lights that ran towards the car’s center. A massive grille adorned by a hexagonal pattern with a black finish created a commanding look over the road. Furthermore, on the bumper, the automaker added side scoops that sported a mesh similar to that from the upper grille. Strangely, Mazda didn’t offer the crossover with fog lamps. Yet, on the lower side, it considered installing a light gray trim that mimicked a skid plate.
Since Mazda made the CX-70 based on a rear-wheel drive platform, it just came naturally to create a cab-rearward design for the vehicle. A slightly ascending waistline started from the headlights and ran along the bodywork towards the taillights. The cabin featured black trims for the B- and C-pillars, while the roof followed a descending line. Finally, at the back, the automaker installed a raked-forward tailgate adorned by a roof spoiler at the top. The rear fascia resembled the CX-90 and revealed a pair of corner-mounted taillights stretched from the rear quarter panels to the tailgate.
The 2025 CX-70’s interior boasted high-quality materials on the door panels and the dashboard. Mazda also offered Alcantara upholstery as an option to please those customers looking for a premium vehicle. At the front, the two bolstered bucket seats offered plenty of legroom and headroom. They were divided by a center console that housed an armrest, two cupholders covered by a lid, the controller for the infotainment system, and the gear selector. Fronting the driver was a mixed instrument cluster that featured a TFT and two analog dials. Atop the center stack, the automaker placed the screen for the infotainment system. In the back, the 2025 CX-70 featured a split-folding (60/40) bench fit for three passengers and a large trunk behind it.
Under the hood, the CX-70 was available with two engine options: a 3.3-liter turbocharged gasoline powerplant helped by an electric motor or a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid version. Power went into all corners via an automatic transmission for both versions.
