German manufacturer MZ has a very long history in motorcycle building, going back to 1906, when the company started. After a long period of time with lots of ups and downs, and even after changing multiple owners and ceasing production for more than one year, MZ is back with very interesting news.
MZ are back with the promise of a revolutionary change in motorcycle engine building. The new design eliminates the fixed valve timing camshaft and the need for a throttle body for the regulation and delivery of the fuel/ air mixture.
Instead of a fixed power curve, directly related to a specific rpm, the new engine is supposed to be able to optimize the fuel delivery for any rpm, thus eliminating the compromise traditional engines make for rpm segments outside the “ideal range”.
Using ride-by-wire and complex ECU calculations, variable valve timing will be possible. The new engine will be able to modify valve lift and duration to optimal values, according to the rpm. Martin Wimmer of MZ notes that the engine will deliver a low valve lift at low rpm, whereas increasing the lift as engine revs up.
Thanks to fewer moving parts, lower friction and optimized fuel flow and combustion, the new MZ engine promises a 30% mileage increase. We're keen to see the new engine making it to the streets and meeting these expectations, as we hope it will also make it to bigger bikes.
