Rather quirkily, the press release accompanying this near-introduction of a model that's still camouflaged is obviously redacted to obscure the name. We're not secret agents, but we logically think it's going to be called DS 8 and slot between the DS 7 crossover and the DS 9 flagship saloon.
The company, which currently produces the DS 3 luxury supermini, DS 4 subcompact executive hatchback, DS 7 compact luxury crossover SUV, as well as the DS 9 flagship executive, is about to unveil a new model – which has been intensely spied on by our spy photographer partners earlier this year.
"Charismatic styling, aerodynamic lines, avant-garde technology, and first-class comfort" are the pillars for the foundation of the new crossover SUV model with a fastback body profile. DS Automobiles has also published some eloquent teasers of their upcoming fully electric vehicle – and the main novelty here is not the fastback crossover coupe-SUV body style, which isn't reinventing anything, but rather the all-electric range it will offer.
The French automaker, part of Stellantis, promises that all details and the styling will be revealed before the end of the year, so the wait isn't going to be long. Expected to adopt the DS 8 moniker, this new model will have a WLTP rating of up to 750 km or 466 miles on a single charge. That's way better than many of the current crossover SUV EVs already on sale – like Tesla's Model Y, which has up to 600 km of range according to WLTP when selecting the Long Range RWD model.
Of course, it remains to be seen what the cost for this great range will be – DS Automobiles would rather compete with Mercedes and other luxury brands in terms of pricing than Tesla, which has become pretty much 'mainstream.' Back to the teasers for the DS Automobiles prototype, the camouflage wrap highlights the range in bold colors – gold and black. They're also inspired by the livery of the DS Formula E racer and don't hide much of the design because they're applied directly onto the body, just like any other commercially available wrap.
According to the company, the impressive range is also achieved through careful aerodynamics – it features a sleek roofline, it has active intakes for the front bumper, flying buttresses, and a low hood, all contributing to a drag coefficient of 0.24 cd. Up front, there are fancy DS PixelVision LED headlights with vertical DRL LEDs, and the sharp LED taillights are styled as boomerangs. Around the lower parts, there is subtle body cladding, and the high-rider stance is obvious from the teaser photos – so it's safe to assume this model will feature both RWD and AWD options for the all-electric powertrain when it debuts before the end of the year.
