The good folks over at the racing-focused ImportRace channel on YouTube are once again dwelling around their usual venue - Island Dragway in Great Meadows, New Jersey, hunting for treasure troves of quarter-mile dragstrip battles.
The last few videos from the channel have been quite a joyride, frankly, as the Test & Tune Day events at New Jersey's sole quarter-mile racetrack are always full of surprises. For example, we've seen just about everything – from Chevy Tri-Five Hot Rods to Corvette E-Ray performance hybrids, from Shelby GT500s to F-150 trucks, and from imports to feisty Mopars.
Alas, we haven't seen this – a humongous, old-school GMC diesel truck going up against a thoroughly modern sports car like the S650 seventh-generation Ford Mustang. No worries, we're crossing that off the list right now. But first, a contemporary skirmish will show us that EVs aren't infallible anymore.
So, the main course is a race between a gray and glossy black S650 seventh-generation Ford Mustang, most likely of the GT Premium variety judging by the add-ons, and a Tesla Model Y crossover SUV, which is erroneously identified as a Tesla Model 3 by the video's author. Well, he was probably surprised by how good the Mustang was – and it didn't hit anything in the process.
Jokes aside, the gray Ford Mustang with black wheels and crimson brake calipers had a much better start of the line than the blue Tesla Model Y, which showed its driver certainly didn't take advantage of the near-instantaneous torque at its disposal. The 2.73 versus 7.38 reaction times also showed the difference, and the Mustang versus Tesla skirmish ended in obliteration.
Not for the ICE-powered vehicle, as it was customary not long ago, but for the EV: 12.45s at 113 mph versus 12.8s at 112 mph! The trap speeds clearly show these two were comparable – so the difference was made by the higher skill of the Ford driver. Next up, the Mustang GT also went for dessert – it raced against a massive diesel-powered GMC truck that's full of chrome and riddled with patina.
Well, on this occasion, the Ford Mustang GT probably could have raced in reverse and still win the skirmish – the Blue Oval representative was so far ahead (12.33s at 114 mph) that the videographer almost ended the video before we could see the result for the GMC truck: 17.89s at 78 mph! Still, it was pretty cool seeing them side by side – a modern rendition of the classic David versus Goliath legend.
By the way, if you also want a Ford Mustang, the 2025 model year kicks off at almost $32k for the 315-hp EcoBoost inline-four turbo, followed by the Premium version at $37,545. The Coyote V8 with five liters of displacement is accessible starting with the GT Fastback model at $45,560, with the GT Premium starting at $50k and the 500-hp Dark Horse or Dark Horse Premium are no less than $63,380 or $68,375, respectively.
