Saint-Malo is currently the newest ship added to the fleet of French shipping operator Brittany Ferries, and once it starts operating in February next year, it will officially become the most sustainable ship with regular routes on the English Channel.
Brittany Ferries has committed to what it calls "the most ambitious fleet renewal program in its history." To do so, it has commissioned five E-Flexer ships from Stena RoRo. The first one, Galicia, was delivered in 2020. Saint-Malo is the fourth one, and it will be followed by the fifth and final one, Guillaume de Normandie.

These new hybrid ships use a new generation of hybrid-LNG propulsion systems estimated to reduce fuel consumption by 15% compared to previous ships and promise an overall 25% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, these systems drastically reduce underwater noise, making the new ship friendlier to marine life.

The Saint-Malo is special because it boasts the highest passenger cabin capacity of all the E-Flexers (over 380 cabins). It also claims to feature the largest battery-hybrid package on the market: 12 MWh in total.

A hybrid-LNG ship means that the Saint-Malo can operate exclusively on batteries, on LNG, or on a combination of fuels. Its multi-fuel engines are compatible with LNG (liquefied natural gas), biodiesel, biogas, and marine diesel (MGO). On the other hand, the ship's impressive battery capacity allows it to rely entirely on battery power for operations such as departure and maneuvers during docking.

When docked, the Saint-Malo can operate fossil-free, drastically reducing the overall emission level in port. A built-in 8 MW shore connection was specifically added for fast battery charging. The Saint-Malo is able to operate at 17.5 knots (32.4 kph) on batteries alone.

Brittany Ferries has agreed to charter the Saint-Malo for ten years, with a purchase option after four. The new hybrid-LNG ship will replace the company's old ferry, Bretagne, which has been operating on the Portsmouth-St Malo route for almost 40 years.

Saint-Malo is set to kick off regular operations on this route starting in February next year. The final vessel in the new fleet, Guillaume de Normandie, will travel between Portsmouth and Caen starting in April 2025.

The new ferry operating on the English Channel will combine clean propulsion with modern amenities and a higher level of passenger comfort. The modern interior designed by Figura Arkitekter AB) is inspired by the unique beauty of the Brittany region, reflected in the luminosity, color palette, and spaciousness of the new ferry. Passengers will enjoy bigger beds, premium linens, Wi-Fi access in all cabins and public areas, and a wider variety of options (including ones for pets).

LNG is widely considered the best type of fuel currently available for maritime transportation. In the future, these new hybrid-LNG ships will be able to switch to greener fuel alternatives due to their flexible propulsion system.
