Even with countless tiny homes on wheels on the road and many being produced as you read this article, we can still find unique builds tailored to people's wants and needs. Today, I'm looking at a premium camper van with a one-of-a-kind layout.
The cool part about building your own camper van or having a specialized individual or company make a custom conversion is that you can design the exact interior that fits your wants and needs like a glove.

Meet Tim, Gina, and their tiny home on wheels, a custom-built 2011 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with a 170" wheelbase. It was converted by Sequoia + Salt Vans, a Farmingdale, New Jersey-based company specialized in transforming vans into comprehensive mobile homes suitable for all types of travel.

As usual, I'll start with the exterior. You'll know this rig means business as soon as you lay eyes on it. This camper van rides on Black Rhino wheels wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires.

It's finished with a beautiful pale blue wrap paired with some black accents, such as the hood or bumper. Speaking of the front part of the vehicle, Tim has a facelift done with the front end of a 2017 Sprinter. Moreover, he fitted two Dobinson Zenith lights and a Smittybilt winch rated for 12,000 lb. (5,443 kg).

You'll find a ladder mounted to the van's driver's side. Climb on it, and you'll discover a Front Runner Slimline roof rack that holds 400 W solar panels while also making room for a Fantastic vent and a 12 V Dometic RTX A/C.

On the sides, you'll notice Vanspeed capsules (also known as flares) designed to increase the bedroom space inside. Each capsule comes with an awning-style C.R. Laurence window.

Tim fitted FVC (Flatline Van Co.) side steps to make it easier to get in. Slide the main door open, and you'll first notice a fold-down bamboo table that is perfect for enjoying a meal or a drink outside, especially since you can use a plug underneath to connect a portable induction stove. Another important accessory at the entrance is a Van Essential bug screen that can be rolled up.

Step inside, and a tastefully designed living space will greet you. Regarding aesthetics, the couple opted for dark blue cabinetry and grey flooring paired with shiplap walls, and the ceiling was made of natural-colored wood. Brown leather upholstery, a grey subway-tiled backsplash, and other wood accents, such as the countertops, complement the look.

So, what's so different about this layout? First of all, there's a lot of separation between the living space areas; that's something we don't typically see in camper vans. There's no wall separating the driver's cabin from the living space.

However, Tim installed an RB Components soft partition, which essentially acts as a soft wall yet can be raised whenever you want. Furthermore, the driver and passenger seats can be swiveled to have the interior. There's also a heat exchanger underneath the passenger seat that provides hot air into the space.

Then, we have the kitchen and seating area in the middle part of the interior. A wall with a sliding door separates the two from the bathroom and bedroom in the rear. Let's take them step by step.

You'll find the rig's seating area dead ahead of the entrance. It consists of two benches with a dinette table in between. The latter can be lowered to connect the two benches, creating a lounge that can also serve as a day bed. Furthermore, each bench has a massive drawer underneath.

Above, Sequoia + Salt's team devised three cabinets. The one in the front houses a control panel for the van's utilities. It comprises a power system monitor/controller, a switch for the solar panels, a remote for the ceiling bent, and switches for a water pump and lights.

Behind the seating area, Tim envisioned (and the builders delivered) a tall "beverage station" with three compartments, as well as two drawers, and a pull-out pantry.

On the opposite side, you'll discover the kitchen. It features a white Corian countertop, a huge flip-up table offering more meal prep space, a 130-liter Isotherm fridge/freezer, and a deep stainless steel sink with a pull-out faucet.

You can use two overhead cabinets and a cabinet underneath the sink for storage. The latter houses a garbage can and a two-stage water filtration system.

The sliding door in the partition wall has a mirror on the side facing the kitchen and seating area. Go through the door, and you'll find two counters on your left and right, each with four drawers/cabinets. The one on the left also has a large mirror cabinet above, while the other has three floating shelves above.

All these compartments offer storage space except for one of the cabinets on the right. It hides a slide-out dry-flush toilet system with a toilet rim. To use it, you need to clip a bag inside and do your business. What's more, the drawer underneath this cabinet also serves as a step for getting into bed.

Finally, we have the bedroom occupying the living space's rear part. It boasts a large bed with a RoamRest mattress, two windows with sliding screens, and a Dometic A/C above.

This area feels a bit cramped because four Van Essential soft cabinets (two on each side) take up a lot of the upper space. However, they're mounted to L-Tracks on the ceiling, so they can easily be taken down and replaced with other accessories or gear.

Like in most camper vans with fixed bedrooms, the space underneath is used as a garage. It's split into three parts: boxes on the sides housing the utility systems and a middle part with a huge slide-out tray for storage. Moreover, the garage is accessible from both outside and inside the van (through a tambour door).

Power is on the left, and to say that this van's electrical system is "powerful" might even be an understatement. Its highlights are two 400 Ah LiFePO4 batteries, a 3,000 W inverter, a 50-amp DC-DC charger, and a charge controller connected to the solar panels on the roof.

Tim shared that the battery charge has never gone under 80%, so it's safe to say that the couple can enjoy worry-free off-grid traveling, at least when it comes to power.

The box on the opposite side holds the plumbing system. It consists of a 30-gallon (113.5-liter) freshwater and a diesel-powered AquaHot boiler that heats a glycol and water mixture, which flows through tubing into heat exchangers. Specifically, the one under the passenger seat and another one in the rear.

To maximize the storage space, which seems to never be enough in a camper van, the couple fitted multiple Van Essential accessories to the rear doors, such as window coverings with pockets. There's also a Van Essential bug net that can cover the entire opening when rolled down.

Overall, this unique rig by Sequoia + Salt Vans is incredibly practical and can undoubtedly be a full-time home on wheels. It packs a ton of creature comforts neatly integrated into an aesthetically pleasing space. The only essential feature (or at least something that some adventurers consider essential) is a shower—a hide-away shower between the two counters in the bedroom could be a solution.
