Back in early November, two significant things happened across the US automotive market that were of utmost importance to Subaru enthusiasts – the Japanese automaker reported its ten-month deliveries, and our spy photographer partners caught the next Outback prototypes out in the open.
Subaru of America – or SOA – announced that its October sales rose slightly by 1.5% to 54,552 units, thus continuing the positive streak of "27 consecutive months of yearly month-over-month growth." After the first ten months, the niche Japanese automaker revealed sales of 548k vehicles in America, up 5.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

The best performers were all crossover SUVs, by the way – the entry-level Crosstrek jumped more than 15% to almost 148k units, followed by the compact Forester with an 18% rise to over 143k units, and the mid-size Outback soaring by 3.4% to nearly 140k vehicle deliveries. Naturally, we're not in the least bit surprised that the company is now intensely testing the next iteration of the Outback since the Forester is already all-new for the 2025MY, and the third-generation Crosstrek also arrived recently for the 2024MY.

While many still consider the Subaru Outback a station wagon version of the Legacy with a suspension lift for good off-road measures and other practical reasons, its appeal is quite obvious because many other crossover wagons are members of the luxury sector and cost way more than the current-generation 2025 Outback which kicks off at just $28,895.

However, Subaru probably decided the lifted wagon chatter needed to end – the prototypes discovered by our spy photographer partners not only depicted an all-new design ethos for the seventh-generation Outback but also revealed it with traditional crossover SUV proportions. Naturally, besides the rumor mill, the parallel universes of vehicular CGI have also taken a keen interest in what happens with the 2026 Subaru Outback.

As such, the members of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators are hard at work envisioning the unofficial, hypothetical looks of the new mid-size CUV - Nikita Chuicko, the virtual artist better known as kelsonik on social media, also thinks that now is the right CGI time to work on the upcoming Subaru Outback and decided to present his vision.

As noticed in the spy photos of the prototypes, the 2026 Subaru Outback will differ significantly from the sixth-generation 2025 Subaru Forester because it deploys the split-headlight styling at the front. It does share some of its 'muscular profile' traits on the side, has a window hump at the C-pillar's level, and also comes with presumed full-width LED taillights that also intrude below the D-pillar on the side of the vehicle. As for what's under the hood, everyone believes the new Outback will become a member of the hybrid CUV guild. So, what do you think?
