The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 story may have ended, yet this muscle car keeps making headlines even after it left the assembly line. You know, just like Dodge's crazy Hellcat (and Demon) family and the occasional Chevy Camaro ZL1.
You cannot really blame us for dedicating all kinds of stories to the Blue Oval's monstrous ride, which used to have more power than the GT supercar, right? After all, every gearhead and their pet loves fast cars, especially those that can give supercars a run for their money at a fraction of their cost.
Based on the previous-generation Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT500 is a ten-second car down the quarter mile, albeit on a good day and in perfect conditions. We have seen various copies that are far quicker than that, yet the tuning fairy visited them. This explains why they can run quarter miles in nine and even eight seconds.
Under the hood lies a V8 motor with supercharging. The 5.2-liter unit is good for 627 pound-foot (847 Nm) of torque and 760 horsepower (771 ps/567 kW). These were the official numbers that the Dearborn company released when the muscle car broke cover, also stating that it takes in the region of three seconds to deal with the 0-60 mph (0-97 kph) sprint.
The last time we encountered the S550-based Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 doing its thing at a drag strip, it was an orange copy that met an old-timer. The latter machine was none other than the Pontiac GTO, and you can pretty much guess what happened in that drag race, or can you? Actually, you may want to check out this link for that, albeit preferably after watching the video that we embedded at the bottom of this story.
Why is that, you ask? Well, if you have to pop that question, you either didn't pay attention to the title or simply forgot about it while we babbled about this dreamy muscle car. The reason is that another example met one bad German supercar in the New World and decided to settle its dispute by engaging in a 1/4-mile battle against it from a standing start.
Can you guess which of the two fast rides went across the finish line first? Probably, as we all know it takes a lot of power to beat the mighty Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 into submission, and depending on the configuration of the Porsche 911, which was its ad-hoc rival, this model might just have what it takes to do that. It is worth noting that the video below also shows other drag races between the Shelby GT500 and Porsche 911, so it’s certainly worth watching. That said, you know what to do next, don't you?
