In late 2024, Honda introduced the Passport TrailSport as the most off-road-oriented vehicle from its lineup, showing customers that it could produce an SUV that wasn't afraid to get its tires dirty.
Honda was no stranger to the off-road community. Previously, it had the 1993 Crossroad, a badge-engineered Land Rover Discovery I, and the 1995 Acura SLX, an upscale version of the Isuzu Trooper sold in the U.S. market. However, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport was the most capable off-road vehicle ever designed by the Japanese automaker. It was created specifically for U.S. customers and developed by an Ohio-based team. The car manufacturer offered the new vehicle in three grades: RTL, TrailSport, and TrailSport Elite. Compared to the 2024 Honda Passport, the new model had a longer wheelbase, provided more legroom for those seated in the back, and slightly increased power. In addition, it featured an upgraded all-wheel-drive system that allowed the vehicle to go far beyond its predecessors on trails and off-road paths.
With its squared-looking front fascia, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport impressed its customers and had a demanding look on the road. The C-shaped daytime running lights that encircled the three sides of the rectangular headlights emphasized the adventurous character of the vehicle. Between them, Honda installed a wide black upper grille where the brand's badge took center stage to underscore the SUV's width. Below it, on the upper side of the wrapped-around plastic bumper, Honda stamped the Passport nameplate. At the same time, the automaker put a steel skid plate below the engine bay to protect the vehicle's drivetrain.
From its profile, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport showed its off-road stance. Its short front overhang was followed by black plastic cladding that adorned the wheel arches. All versions featured alloy wheels wrapped in 31-inch General Grabber tires developed especially for this model. The steep and panoramic windshield paved the way for a tall greenhouse. A flat roof followed, and behind the rear doors, the automaker installed plastic trims on the bodywork and created the image of a vehicle with a backpack. At the back, the power tailgate was wide and flanked by corner-mounted taillights that lit with a T-shape pattern. As a last detail, Honda stamped the Passport nameplate on the entire width of the lower part of the tailgate.
Inside, the automaker created a spacious cabin with room for five adults. The driver fronted a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel and a three-spoke steering wheel. Next to the instrument cluster, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system with Google built-in, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Honda listened to its customers who complained about cars without physical buttons, so it installed a turn-volume knob close to the driver and underneath the infotainment unit's display and a few other buttons for the HVAC system. In addition, on the center console, between the bolstered front bucket seats, the automaker placed more switchgear for the transmission, parking brake, driving modes, hill-descent control, the button that engaged and disengaged the start/stop system, and the brake hold one. In the back, the split-folding (60/40) bench seat provided 1.82" more legroom than the fourth generation of the Passport.
Under the hood, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport had the same 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine as the previous generation of the Passport but with five more ponies. The automaker paired it with a ten-speed automatic transmission and Honda's i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system. The Japanese car manufacturer said the refreshed unit allowed the vehicle to react faster and send 40% more torque to the rear axle when needed.
